Tricks, Treats & AIP-Friendly Eats
It’s October, which means Halloween is creeping up on us! Before we know it, there will be costumes, decorations, parties, pumpkins, trick-or-treating, and, of course, enough candy to feed a small army.
If you’re following the AIP, Halloween can feel downright scary with mini chocolate bars lurking around every corner!
Just because we’re gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free, egg-free, soy-free, nut-free, nightshade-free, and refined sugar-free … it doesn’t mean we have to be fun-free!
There are plenty of ways to enjoy Halloween without feeling like you’ve been left on the sidelines. Food doesn’t have to be the only focus, but I promise you, with a little planning, you can have some pretty fabulous AIP-friendly treats of your own! A little creativity can turn ordinary food into a feast fit for your little AIP monsters.
So this month, we’re embracing the fun of Halloween with some practical survival strategies, a few helpful resources, festive recipe inspiration, ideas for making the season safer for everyone, and some healthier Halloween finds to make life a little easier.
🖤 Sometimes it’s scary how delicious healing food can be. 🖤
📚This Month’s Resources
Can I Cheat on the AIP?
Halloween is probably one of the biggest temptation-filled times of the year. Candy is everywhere, treats are being passed around, and even the most committed AIPer might find themselves wondering, Is one little cheat really going to hurt?
Before you decide to throw caution to the wind, check out my post Can I Cheat on the AIP? It takes a closer look at what happens when you step outside the AIP and why those choices matter.
Surviving Social Life on the AIP
Halloween isn’t just about what’s in the candy bowl. There are parties, gatherings, work events, school events and plenty of opportunities for food to become part of the social equation.
My Surviving Social Life post has practical tips to help you navigate those situations while following the AIP, without feeling like you have to hide in the corner while everyone else has fun.
🌱 Healing Beyond Food
Don’t Forget to Have Some Fun!
It’s easy for the AIP to become all about the food. Reading labels, planning meals, figuring out what we can eat, what we can’t eat, and what we’re going to do when everyone else is eating something different.
But there’s a whole lot more to taking care of ourselves than what’s on our plate.
Go for a walk and enjoy the changing leaves. Get outside and soak up a little sunshine. Put on your Halloween costume, even if you’re only wearing it around the house. Carve a pumpkin. Watch a ridiculous scary movie. Get together with friends. Play a game. Laugh until your stomach hurts.
You don’t need a special reason to have fun, and you certainly don’t need to earn it by being “perfect” with your food.
Sometimes, fun is part of the healing journey, too.
Halloween, But Make It Safe for Everyone

These days, it’s not unusual for everyone to have different treats. Many schools have nut-free policies, kids have food allergies and intolerances, and families are used to working around different dietary needs. So if you or your child can’t eat the treats being handed out, you’re definitely not the only one, and there’s no reason to feel weird about it.
When it comes to Halloween specifically, the Teal Pumpkin Project, created by FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education), takes that idea one step further by encouraging people to offer non-food treats alongside traditional Halloween candy. A teal pumpkin on your doorstep lets trick-or-treaters know that you have something other than candy available.
There are lots of fun, economical options to share! Glow sticks, bubbles, stickers, flashing rings, pencils, tiny toys, coloring books, painting sets and so much more! If you’re offering both candy and non-food treats, simply keep them in separate bowls.
I love the idea behind this because it isn’t about making Halloween less fun or drawing attention to what someone can’t have. It’s about having another option so everyone gets to join in.
And really, isn’t that what we’re after? More fun, fewer food worries, and nobody feeling like they’re the odd one out.

🎃 Halloween Survival Strategies
Have a Plan, Then Have Some Fun
- Start with the good stuff. Kick off the night with a fun, Halloween-themed meal before heading out trick-or-treating or to a party. A satisfying meal with protein, healthy fats and fiber means you’re not heading into the evening ravenous and staring down a bowl of mini chocolate bars. Check out the recipe inspiration below for a feast fit for your AIP monsters, big and small! For an easy dinner that can be ready and waiting while the Halloween fun gets underway, take a look at my Slow Cooker Recipes from last month, too.
- Know your game plan. A little advance planning can save you from making decisions under pressure. Know what you’re comfortable with, what you’re going to pass on, and what you’ll do when that candy bowl starts making its rounds.
- Bring your own. Heading to a party, work event or school gathering? Bring an AIP-friendly option you actually want to eat. Don’t rely on whatever happens to be available when you get there.
- Make room for the fun that isn’t food. Costumes, decorating, pumpkin carving, scary movies, games, music, Halloween crafts… there’s plenty to enjoy that doesn’t involve eating anything at all.
